VOLUNTEER WITH US

Volunteers with Dunbar Day Centre assist the staff to ensure that members are supported and stimulated to achieve their individual outcomes. This could be through:

 

    • establishing, maintaining and developing relationships with members, either within the day centre or through community support;
  •  
    • providing assistance with domestic tasks, such as serving meals, washing up and cleaning;
  •  
    • working with individuals to promote mobility and independence;
  •  
    • being involved in the planning and implementation of activities in the day centre;
  •  
    • providing assistance on trips or outings;
  •  
    • supporting people in the community according to individual outcomes.

Volunteers can commit anywhere from a couple of hours to whole days per week and so the hours can be variable. Further, volunteers can offer to help with specific activities / tasks only, such as preparing and serving meals, or working with an identified individual.

 

The day centre staff team and trustees are there to support volunteers, who will participate in training and supervision as agreed with the Manager of the day centre. Volunteers are also accountable to the Centre Management Team and are required to verbally report any changes or concerns to the Manager of the day centre.

Volunteer Roles

Activity Support

Work alongside staff to prepare and run activities for the service users.

Bus Escort

Accompany members on the bus to / from the day centre, ensuring their safety and comfort.

Admin Support

Support the Centre Management Team with identified administration tasks.

Kitchen / Domestic

Preparing drinks; serving food;  helping with the washing up or cleaning; and / or maintenance of the building.

Garden Maintenance

General weeding, tidying of the garden and development of the garden space.

Fundraising

Support staff and trustees to organise fundraising activities and events.

Short Term Projects

Support for specific projects, such as events / parties, delivering meals / treats, painting and decorating, general centre maintenance, etc.

Volunteer Requirements

We welcome volunteers with a genuine interest and enthusiasm for supporting older people and so no experience in health and social care is required. In particular, we are looking for volunteers who:

    • are positive, empathetic, kind and patient, with the ability to allow service users to be as independent as possible;
    • have good communication skills;
    • have the ability to work as part of a team;
    • are reliable and trustworthy;
    • have the ability to treat service users with respect and dignity;
    • can use their initiative and follow instructions from the Centre Management Team as appropriate;
    • have a reasonable level of fitness.

Volunteers will also be required to follow good Health and Safety Practices.

Additionally, there may be instances where volunteers are invited to in-house training sessions.

All volunteers must have an up-to-date PVG but the day centre team can help sort this for any volunteers who do not already have one.
